ACDP urges decrease in the price of essential foods for the poor

Apr 18, 2023

“The ACDP calls for urgent government intervention in the food crisis plaguing households. Food insecurity is a developing crisis affecting millions of people, especially in our rural areas.

The impact of food insecurity has a negative impact on the health outcomes of people living with HIV/AIDS, hypertension and diabetes. It further stunts the development of children and without urgent intervention the consequences will be dire on our communities.

As we approach the commemoration of Freedom Day, South Africans are suffering the consequences of soaring price increases, and the incapacity or lack of political will by government to support a reduction in the price of essential foods.

When I visited communities in the rural parts of the Northern Cape I was met with the desperation of families in towns like Britstown, Richmond and Hopetown. South Africans are facing hunger daily. The ACDP therefore is in support of calls for a reduction in essential food prices.

The ACDP will march on the 27 April 2023 for the basic rights of our people, and for government to support the decrease in the price of essential foods for the poor.”
