School transport must be safer says ACDP MPL

The ACDP sends their deepest condolences to the families of the 12 learners who perished yesterday in Merafong on the way to school. We call on the Gauteng Education Department to leave no stone unturned in the investigation into the possible causes of the accident. It is tragic that these young lives were lost in pursuit of education.

Furthermore, Gauteng Education must look into ways to make scholar transport safer. Do these vehicles have regular roadworthy checks? Do the drivers have advanced driving skills? Are the minibuses overloaded or not?

It is also imperative that learners are able to attend good schools closer to their homes in order to minimise time spent in transit.
