Jul 7, 2023

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) extends its condolences to the friends and family of anti-apartheid activist Mr Essop Pahad who has passed on at the age of 84.

Mr Pahad, who was born in Schweizer-Reneke in the former Transvaal Province, served as Minister in the Presidency from 1999 to 2008, and will be remembered as a pragmatic struggle stalwart, who had a keen interest in history.

He held degrees from both the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of Sussex, and had a true passion for politics. He completed a PhD in history, with his thesis titled “The Development of Indian Political Movements in South Africa 1924 – 1946”.

We are grateful to Mr Pahad for his commitment in the fight for freedom in South Africa, and for his service to our people.

May his soul rest in peace.
