Speech on the Report of the P20 Youth Parliament
Speech by ACDP MP, Wayne Thring

Youth are not a statistic but the heartbeat of our future

Dec 3, 2025

Honourable House Chairperson, the P20 Youth Parliament report reminds us that the future of South Africa rests on the shoulders of its young people.

In the report, the ACDP emphasised that youth development must be anchored in values, education, and inclusive economic growth. Our ACDP youth argued in the face of a youth unemployment rate that remains above 40% that “South Africa works when youth work,” highlighting the moral and social imperative to unlock potential through meaningful participation.

The primary challenge youth face in South Africa is the mismatch between education and labour market needs, leaving many without the skills demanded by employers. Compounding this is limited job creation in a sluggish economy, restricting opportunities even for qualified youth. Before youth voices can be heard or heeded, they need employment.

Graduates often finish school or university without practical skills. Technical expertise, digital literacy, and hands-on experience are missing, making candidates less competitive. Bridging this gap requires reforming curricula to focus on realworld applications and workforce readiness. Technology adoption is critical. Digital skills are increasingly required across professions, and affordable internet access with training can empower youth to thrive in the digital economy.

Unemployed youth face social exclusion, mental health struggles, and vulnerability to crime. Communities with high joblessness experience poverty and unrest, undermining national stability.

Entrepreneurship offers solutions. Young South Africans who start businesses generate income and jobs. Government’s Small Business department can provide resources to support youth-led start-ups.

The ACDP urges a return to vocational training, apprenticeships, mentorship, and career guidance. Public-private partnerships are especially effective in generating opportunities across sectors.

As Kingdom-builders, the ACDP calls for Parliament to act decisively. Youth are not a statistic but the heartbeat of our future.

I thank you.
