The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) strongly condemns the fatal shooting of former South African boxing world champion Zolani Tete, who was killed outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on 21 August 2026.
According to reports, Tete was in his vehicle waiting for his gate to open when two armed suspects wearing balaclavas allegedly opened fire. A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with him was also injured and taken to hospital. Police have opened investigations into the murder and attempted murder, and no arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
We view this brutal killing as yet another painful reminder that many South Africans no longer feeling safe, even in their own homes. We are deeply concerned by the continued loss of life through violent crime, including murders, political killings, and gender-based violence.
The ACDP calls on the South African Police Service to act swiftly to identify, arrest, and bring the perpetrators to justice. We further call for decisive measures to strengthen public safety, improve the effectiveness of the criminal justice system, and ensure that those convicted of murder face sentences that reflect the seriousness of their crimes.
We remain of the view that South Africa must urgently confront the lawlessness that continues to undermine communities and place families at risk. Correctional centres must fulfil their rehabilitative purpose and must not become spaces where criminal networks are strengthened or from which further crimes are planned.
The families of all victims deserve justice, and justice must be served without delay so that they may begin to find closure.
The ACDP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and supporters of Zolani Tete, as well as to all families affected by violent crime in South Africa.
May Zolani’s soul rest in God’s eternal peace.
