Historic Trump-brokered ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas welcomed

Oct 14, 2025

The ACDP welcomes the release of hostages that took place this morning, following an historic agreement leading to a ceasefire in the Israel/Hamas war that has been waged since Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023. Whilst we are deeply saddened by the loss of thousands of innocent lives in both Israel and Gaza, we believe Israel has the right to defend itself and its citizens from such attacks. The prayers of people throughout the world have now been answered with the cease-fire agreement and release of hostages.

We commend United States President Trump for his bold leadership and relentless diplomacy in concluding this historic agreement. We also commend Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for his determination to bring Israeli citizens home while defending and safeguarding his nation’s security and future. Lastly, we also commend those many other leaders, mainly from Arab and Muslim countries, who worked tirelessly to conclude this agreement. This is phase one of a 20-point plan to secure a Gaza ceasefire and release all Israeli hostages in exchange for about 2 000 Palestinian prisoners, (including, controversially, 250 prisoners serving long and life sentences), and with increased humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza. The next phase envisions a new governing body in Gaza without Hamas, the formation of a multinational force, and the disarmament of Hamas.

Let us continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and peace through-out the Middle East. Far too many innocent lives have been lost in the war between Israel and Hamas and other organisations in the region.

The ACDP lastly calls on the South African government to re-establish full diplomatic ties with Israel and to reconsider its case against Israel in the International Court of Justice, given the agreement and cease-fire. The hearing on the merits will cost an estimated R500 million in addition to the approximately R100 million already spent. These funds can be far better spent resolving domestic challenges, including improving health, education and fighting crime.
