The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and communities affected by the recent mass shootings in Carletonville, Gauteng; Lwandle, Cape Town; and KwaMakhutha, KwaZulu-Natal.
These tragic incidents, which have claimed the lives of many South Africans in a matter of days, represent yet another devastating reminder of the violent crime epidemic facing our nation. The murder of innocent people, including reports that a pregnant woman was among those killed in the KwaMakhutha massacre, highlights the ruthless nature of the criminal elements operating within our communities.
The ACDP is gravely concerned by the increasing frequency and scale of mass shootings across South Africa. Whether linked to organised crime, gang activity, illegal mining operations, extortion networks, taxi violence, or other criminal means, these incidents expose serious shortcomings in our crime-fighting and intelligence capabilities.
Several communities are held hostage by heavily armed criminals who act with confidence that they can evade arrest and prosecution. This situation is unacceptable and demands an immediate and coordinated national response.
The ACDP therefore calls for an intelligence-led national operation targeting organised criminal syndicates, a crackdown on illegal firearms, ammunition trafficking and weapons smuggling, and for the strengthening of our crime intelligence and specialised investigative units.
We reiterate our call for harsher sentences for perpetrators of organised and violent crime. In addition, we encourage government to establish greater cooperation between police, communities, churches, faith-based organisations, and civil society to combat crime and to restore public trust.
Government has a constitutional obligation to protect the lives and security of all who live in South Africa, and it must demonstrate the political will necessary to confront this crisis.
The ACDP urges President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Minister of Police, and all relevant law enforcement agencies to treat these incidents as a national priority and to ensure that those responsible are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
As we mourn with the affected families, we pray for those who have lost loved ones, for those recovering from their injuries, and for peace, justice, and safety to prevail in every community across our nation.
