The African Christian Democratic Party is deeply saddened by the passing of two of South Africa’s young sporting champions, Jayden Adams and Luqono Makwedini, and extend heartfelt condolences to their families, teammates, coaches, friends, as well as every South African who feel their tremendous loss.
South Africa mourns its young Sundowns and Bafana Bafana champion
Jayden Adams, who passed away in Cape Town on Saturday, was just 25. In his short life he achieved so much. He came through Stellenbosch FC, wore the Sundowns jersey with pride, and helped bring home CAF Champions League glory. Most recently, Jayden represented Bafana Bafana on the world stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing with determination and courage, despite battling personal grief, and reminded us of what patriotism and commitment is. To see this young man win 13 caps, score big for South Africa, and inspire millions at such a young age is both humbling and empowering.
South Africa mourns former South African under 18 prop
Luqono Makwedini passed away in France on Friday at the tender age of 19. When most young adults his age are still finding their feet, Luqono was already pursuing a professional career in rugby as a prop, honing the discipline, sacrifice and team spirit that make the game great. He represented the hopes of our next generation; young men who play not for fame, but for the love of the game, community, and for those cheering them on from the sidelines. Luqono’s potential in rugby was immense, and will continue to inspire us.
Let their passion inspire our purpose
While the nation mourns the loss of these young men, we also celebrate their lives and the inspiration they will continue to be for young, up and coming sportsmen and women. Their lives, though brief, made an impact on so many of us. They worked hard, brought honour to the teams they represented, and they made us proud.
Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends at this time. We pray that God’s peace and comfort, and the love and support of every South African who mourns with you, will help you find solace and strength in this time of grief.
Just as we believe the legacies of Jayden and Luqono will continue to empower and inspire, let us also our part to do them proud by investing more in our youth, helping them realise their dreams, and by building a South Africa where every young person has opportunities to excel, whether in sport, business or other career and academic pursuits. Let their passion inspire our purpose.
Our nation mourns and honours these young champions.
May their souls rest in eternal peace.
