2025: An extremely busy year with many challenges

Dec 4, 2025

Madam Deputy Speaker, it has indeed been an extremely busy year, with many challenges—starting with a much-contested Budget which illustrated our maturing democracy. And it is noteworthy that the recently passed Revised Fiscal Framework and revenue proposals did not elicit the same controversy.

The ACDP believes that leaders are dealers in hope, so we must ask ourselves: “Are we bringing hope to our people? Is the ship starting to move in the right direction?” We believe this to be the case.

It is also noteworthy that we amended the Parliamentary Rules to allow for a designated committee over the Presidency and Vote 1. This is a further development in strengthening Parliamentary oversight over the Presidency in particular. I just wish that members of the public could see behind the scenes—how we greet each other, how we work together, and how we cooperate, rather than the posturing that is so often seen here from this podium. So, maybe that’s something also to bear in mind.

Lastly, it is imperative that we thank our families and spend time with them and our loved ones over this holiday season. It has been a very tough year—

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.’”  Let’s remember to take a rest and keep the Sabbath!

The ACDP wants to thank everyone who has worked so hard, including all the staff and, as I conclude, I think it would be opportune to pray a blessing, known as the Aaronic blessing, upon everyone here:

“May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”

Malibongwe igama leNkosi!
Praise the Name of the Lord!
Prys die Here se Naam!

May you have a blessed, peaceful Christmas and Happy New Year.

God bless and thank you.

Cut poor-performing education programmes such as CSE

Madam Deputy Speaker, the Department of Basic Education received a staggering R32 billion in its budget. It is taxpayers who ultimately paid for this amount, but, are they receiving value for their money? We submit not, given the low rates of literacy, the low rates...

SARS commended for higher-than-expected revenue collection

House Chair, this is basically a taxation bill that sets out rates and monetary amounts. In that regard, the ACDP would like to commend SARS for the higher-than-anticipated revenue collection—that revenue is set to exceed the budget estimates by a staggering R19.7...
