ACDP sends condolences to families who lost loved ones in building site collapse

May 8, 2024

The African Christian Democratic Party is deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries incurred after a five-story construction site in George, Western Cape, collapsed on Monday, 6 May 2024. Present reports indicate that 36 people have been rescued from the rubble so far, seven of whom were dead. 39 people remain unaccounted for.

We commend the emergency services personnel who have assisted in the successful extraction of workers so far and we pray that those still caught in the rubble will be found alive.

This could potentially be one of the worst engineering disaster in South African history. The immediate appointment of an independent team of structural engineers to begin with a probe into the cause of the collapse is most welcome.

The ACDP sends our heartfelt condolences to the family and the co-workers of those who died in the collapse and pray for the speedy recovery of all were injured. We also extend our gratitude to the rescue teams for their unrelenting efforts to search for those still unaccounted for. May their endeavours be fruitful.
