Statement by ACDP MP, Wayne Thring

Illegal military activities within our borders must be exposed and neutralised

Aug 10, 2024

The ACDP joins many South Africans in expressing serious concern about the uncovering of another suspected military-style camp in our country, this time in Modimole, Limpopo.

What we find alarming is the failure of our State Intelligence agencies to pre-empt and neutralise these threats to our national security.  It is inexcusable that a third military camp, where weapons and ammunition was found, has been uncovered without our government’s knowledge, and only after a tip-off.

This latest discovery of another possible military training facility, similar to that where 95 Libyan’s were found to have grossly violated our country’s laws, validates the ACDP’s questions and concerns in relation to how effortless it has become for certain groups to violate our country’s constitutional laws. The contravening of our laws, points to breaches in our state security, intelligence, border patrol, and an inefficient Home Affairs and South African Police Services.

We are now left with the questions: How many more of these illegal military-style training facilities exist on our soil? How many radical, fundamental groups are there, who seek to bring harm to South Africans, or destabilise our neighbours? All indicators show that our intelligence agencies failed us again, like they did with the July Riots in KwaZulu-Natal in 2021.

For these reasons, the ACDP believes it has genuine cause for concern, like many South Africans, and again calls on our crime fighting agencies to leave no stone unturned in its investigations, and to expose and neutralise all illegal military activities found operating within our borders.

Cut poor-performing education programmes such as CSE

Madam Deputy Speaker, the Department of Basic Education received a staggering R32 billion in its budget. It is taxpayers who ultimately paid for this amount, but, are they receiving value for their money? We submit not, given the low rates of literacy, the low rates...
