SANDF’s readiness to defend and protect South Africa questioned

Aug 20, 2026

House Chairperson, the ACDP will not support this shocking report by the Joint SC on Defence and PC on Defence and Military Veterans that has highlighted the potential dangers this country is facing because of weaknesses in this country’s defences and the disgraceful state of our assets.

The ACDP further notes, with deep concern, the serious findings of the Joint Defence Committee’s oversight visit to Denel Aeronautics, Sandock Austral Shipyards, and Air Force Base Durban at the end of April.

While at Denel Aeronautics, the Joint Committee saw how financial troubles and the loss of skilled engineers are weakening our defence industry.

Sandock Austral Shipyards remains vital for our Navy, but delays and poor investment threaten its future role.

At Air Force Base Durban, the Joint Committee found that the infrastructure is old and resources are stretched, limiting readiness.

House Chairperson, this report lays bare some serious weaknesses in our defences. This, together with the recent Defence Budget Vote that exposed further failings, shows that government has not sufficiently prioritised South Africa’s readiness to defend and protect the country and our people.

The report warns of a severe lack of long-term strategic direction in defence, stressing that Cabinet-approved policy documents must urgently be tabled in Parliament to guide realistic, adequately funded planning for the SANDF. This must not be ignored.

Government’s apparent lack of interest in national security is now undeniable, and the ACDP, as should we all in this House, demands accountability and urgent action.

I thank you.
