ACDP remembers former Reserve Bank Governor and Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni

Oct 13, 2024

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) learned with sadness about the passing of Mr Tito Mboweni, our former Finance Minister and Reserve Bank Governor, who passed away on 12 October 2024 at the age of 65 following a short illness.

Mr Mboweni, who was born on 16 March 1959 in Tzaneen, Limpopo, was the youngest of three children. He served as the Minister of Labour between 1994 and 1999 and then went on to become the first black Reserve Bank Governor of South Africa in 1999—a post he held until 2009.

After spending some time in the private sector, Mr Mboweni returned to public office in 2018 and served as Minister of Finance for three years following the resignation of Mr Nhlanhla Nene. He will be remembered as an exemplary public servant who led with selflessness and integrity. He played an extremely crucial role in steering our country’s economy in the right direction during some very challenging economic circumstances.

The ACDP conveys its deepest sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Mr Mboweni, and prays that they will find comfort, healing and strength during this difficult time of loss.
