ACDP decides to stay out of Government of National Unity

Jun 15, 2024

Representatives of the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leadership met with senior representatives of the ANC, on the night of 13 June 2014, where they offered us an opportunity to be part of Government of National Unity (GNU). The reasons positioned for the establishment of the GNU was for the country to advance, prosper, and for service delivery to continue.

In our bilateral meeting, we spoke about a national dialogue and the GNU. We assured the delegation that we will be part of the National dialogue and would consider the GNU. The ACDP raised matters such as the National Health Insurance (NHI) and Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill (BELA) which we wanted to take on review, as well as the possibility of recounts of the vote where we found irregularities at different voting stations. The ANC representatives indicated that on matters where we differed on policy, the proposal was to refer these differences to the Political Council of the proposed GNU.

After further caucus meetings the ACDP leadership decided not to be part of the GNU. Furthermore, the ACDP decided not to support a vote for the incumbent, Mr Ramaphosa, because of the cloud of allegations relating to the Phala Phala saga hanging over his head. When Mr Ramaphosa had an opportunity to take Parliament into his confidence on the Phala Phala saga, he opted to remain silent. The ACDP, additionally, could not support the nomination of Mr Malema.

The ACDP remains committed to the rule of law, the principles of good governance, and to serving the people of South Africa. This we will do without fear, favour or prejudice, and committing to the principles of accountability and transparency in a participatory, constitutional democracy.
