The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) welcomes the positive response by the North-West University (NWU) in uplifting the provisional suspension placed on Mr Shaun Christie following his bold stand against the mandatory enforcement of gender ideology in the induction of first-year students at the Potchefstroom campus.
Mr Christie will be allowed to attend classes while the university further investigates the matter.
Last week, the ACDP launched a petition that currently stands on close to 6,000 signatories calling for Mr Christie’s reinstatement and for the resumption of his studies. Although the investigation has not yet been concluded, we rejoice that Mr Christie is able to continue with his studies. The constitutional freedoms of our democracy must be upheld at all times, and universities should encourage healthy debate and allow freedom of expression rather than suppress it. The South African democratic dispensation in which we live today was realised by those courageous enough to stand on their convictions.
We wish to state unequivocally that as the ACDP we will stand up and fight for freedom of belief and religion. Our conscience upholds our integrity which is vital for ethical conduct. Anyone too afraid to stand up for their principles will be defeated without any enemy in pursuit.
