ACDP condemns bomb attack at political rally in Bulawayo

ACDP Member of Parliament Cheryllyn Dudley today said that “The ACDP condemns the bomb attack at a political rally in Bulawayo which appears to have been an assassination attempt on Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“The ACDP sends condolences and prayers to the injured. This is a disturbing occurrence and the ACDP calls on opposition parties in Zimbabwe to condemn violence and intimidation tactics. Those responsible are the enemies of a democratic Zimbabwe and must face the consequences.”

An object exploded close to Mr Mnangagwa as he was leaving the stage having addressed supporters.  While the president was unhurt, the Zimbabwe state broadcaster (ZBC) reported that Vice-President Kembo Mohadi suffered a leg injury.  Presidential spokesman George Charamba told the Zimbabwe Herald newspaper that there were eight or nine people injured, most of whom had been attended to and discharged from hospital.  ZBC reported that Zanu PF national chairman, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, political commissar, Engelbert Rugeje, and some ZBC crew members were also injured.

President Mnangagwa has visited the injured in hospital. He has condemned the violence as senseless and pleaded for unity.  Mr Mnangagwa came to power last November, ousting his former mentor Robert Mugabe. The president was in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city and an opposition stronghold, to campaign for his Zanu-PF party ahead of nationwide elections taking place on 30 July.

The elections are the first in Zimbabwe since Mr Mugabe was ousted after 37 years in power.
